Top 5 Most Calming Scenes in Movies

Here we are, in the midst of a major global pandemic. I don’t want to add to this anxiety and panic in any way, which I know seems weird to say when I have had two posts in a row that talk about it, but I think that right now this is almost an unavoidable subject. So, amidst my overwhelming anxiety, I started generating a new top five list: the most calming scenes in movies. This is the short part one of a (at least) three-part blog post series involving COVID-19 and adjusting to “social distancing.” We know that while we need to take this virus seriously, it is also really important to stay calm and not to tie ourselves up in knots over things we can’t control. This is definitely something I have been struggling with and I’m so thankful that I have Colin here telling me everything will work itself out, to remain calm, and walking me through with a level head.

That’s where the idea for this list really was born: out of my own anxiety. And in full disclosure, I am finishing this post a week after I started it because all I did last week was work, work-out, marathon movies I had already seen, and listen to Dio (loudly).

5) Anger Management’s Goosfraba scene

I mean what can I say? This is the ultimate calm the eff down scene. Even though I personally laugh at this movie, I know it isn’t for everyone. Everyone I have ever met knows this scene and this line though—and that’s what makes it iconic.

4) Christian Bale’s American Psycho Morning Routine

Speaking of iconic, number four is possibly one of the most iconic scenes on this list (or any of my lists). Even though the movie itself is NOT a relaxing or calming movie (like at all) this particular scene, with the long shots of the meticulously designed apartment and the monotone narration, stands out against the chaotic excessive lifestyle of every other scene in the movie.

3) Camping With the Runaway Girl in The Straight Story

There isn’t a lot to say about Lynch’s only “normal” film except that it’s absolutely wholesome and that I actually recommend the whole movie for anyone who is trying to watch a calm film. This scene in particular though is perfect with its family-strong message, a crackling fire, and camping beneath the stars.

2) The Train Scene From Spirited Away

This scene is really hard to find a clip of, so I apologize that the one above is horrible but it’s the best I could do. This scene is incredibly drawn and enhances the already impeccable world-building in the movie. Again, this whole movie is totally recommended.

1) Literally any Theo Angelopoulos shot

Okay this one is a cheat, but his shots are so scenic and beautiful and his movies are the closest thing to a spiritual experience that I have seen on film—and I’m including Terrence Malick. Please enjoy this compilation I found complete with calming music as well.
